Before the drone era, sky photography was a complex thing. You had to enlist the help of tall buildings, planes, helicopters, ladders, and trees to get a good aerial shot. Drone technology has changed all that. With so many options to choose from, it’s now easier than ever before to get your hands on a high-quality quadcopter and get the best shots from way up the sky.
However, most times, getting the best aerial shots means flying the drone in remote areas. You’d need to first get the drone to location though, in which case a carrying solution is a must-have. A good carrying solution for your drone is one that is tailor-made to carry, protect, and organize that particular drone model and its accessories seamlessly.
In this review, we take a look at the SSE Backpack, one of the most versatile carrying solutions for the DJI Phantom series and their accessories.
The SSE is a carry backpack designed for the DJI Phantom series. It looks just like a normal backpack, except it is slightly bigger and lined with foam padding on the inside that gives it a more boxed shape.
As with most backpacks, the SSE is designed to be an easy carry storage solution that not only carries your drone from one point to another but also keeps it and other delicate accessories safe and secure.
It is light and practical. It transports your drone with ease; simply sling the strap over your shoulders and you’re good to go. No doubt it is built for last-minute packing scenarios and is especially adapted to hiking exploits.
There are 6 outside side pockets and a separate water bottle holder. You can keep other secondary accessories in the outside pockets as there isn’t a lot of room on the inside.
Like most quality backpacks, the SSE is made with ultra-strong nylon fabric; that includes the main carry bag and the shoulder straps.
At only 3.5 pounds, the SSE is very light to carry, even when fully packed. The shoulder straps are padded and adjustable to increase comfort. The backside is flat so that it easily aligns with the carrier’s back. This is especially important for preventing discomfort and back pain if you’re going to be carrying the bag for a prolonged period of time.
For starters, this is a backpack, not a case, so you wouldn’t expect to find the more elaborate compartmentalization that you’d typically find in a drone carry case.
That said, the back has enough space to fit the drone and a couple of accessories. There are three main pockets on the inside. The main pocket in the center of the bag fits the drone – in upside down position. There’s a strap to hold the drone in place.
On either side of the drone pocket is two side pockets where the batteries go. You can fit a total of 4 batteries. You can squeeze the propellers, accessories and other random things in the remaining spaces in front of the drone pocket.
There’s no dedicated pocket for the propellers. There’s also no dedicated pocket for tablets. You can, however, fit a tab in the backpack with some crafty planning.
The backpack comes with a rain cover to protect from water seeping through the fabric into the inside of the bag. If water seeps into the inside of the drone, it can be damaged, just like any other electrical device.
The rain cover does not provide 100% water protection but it is handy in emergency situations such as accidents where a spillage may occur.
Evidently, this type of backpack has limited space on the inside compared to a typical carry case but it gets the job done in the best way that its size allows. If you get the basics right and also use some ingenuity, you can fit a whole load of stuff in this backpack.
As mentioned earlier, the SSE is crafted with ultra-strong nylon fabric that seldom tears. With normal handling, this fabric can last a couple of years.
When the straps start to tear, for instance, it’s a sign that the backpack is starting t seriously wear and needs a replacement.
Broken zippers are also a sign that a replacement is overdue.
With proper handling and care, this backpack should last for slightly more than 2 years. In any case, you should use it as a backup for the main carry case as it is a more practical storage solution in certain instances such as during hiking trips.
The SSE backpack fits the DJI Phantom series of drones including the Phantom 2, Phantom 3 (professional, advanced, and standard), and the Phantom 4.
Based on user reviews, this backpack may not be a good fit for the Phantom 4.
This backpack is sold with a warranty that it is fit for the purpose that it is advertised for. Subsequent damage during handling or use may void the warrant.
Other finer details of the warranty are available upon purchase. Nonetheless, it is good to know that your investment is protected.
A drone backpack is a practical storage solution for delicate drones and their accessories. The SSE backpack helps you to store and keep your drone and its accessories secure. With dedicated battery and accessory compartments, you will always be organized dusting your trips. It is portable and very convenient to use, especially for hiking trips.
Having said that, the SSE is somewhat limited on interior space and dedicated storage pockets. There’s not a whole lot of things that can fit inside but then again, the bag’s main use is storing and securing your drone. A handy rain cover keeps the bag’s contents safe from water.
Overall, the SSE backpack is a simple, convenient, and easy to use storage solution for the DJI Phantom series.
