High Sierra Freewheel Wheeled Book Bag Backpack Review

When my daughter started complaining that her back was really sore I took her to see the doctor when I could not find the cause of the complaint, and he immediately suggested that the books that she was carrying to school and back every day were the root cause. She mentioned that many of her fellow scholars were currently using rolling backpacks for school, so I bought her the High Sierra Freewheel Wheeled Book Bag Backpack.

She loves the bag, as she says that she can fit all the books she needs for the day in it and that it is far easier to pull her books along behind her than to lug a heavy suitcase along, and her back is no longer sore, so I am very thankful for that.

What You Should Look For

I didn’t just run out and purchase the first bag I saw though, I spoke to a few friends who also have children and did thorough research on the Internet to find the best bag. I was advised to look for certain features that would ensure that the bag was a good one and would suit the purpose for which it was meant.

Some of the features to look for are:

  • Sufficient space to contain all necessary books, files etc
  • Multiple pockets for storing small items such as pens, keys, and other smaller items
  • It must be sturdy and durable
  • Smooth rolling over uneven terrain

Ample Space

The High Sierra Freewheel book bag has a large front-load main compartment which can take most of my daughter’s books. As she does not take a laptop to work she can also use the laptop compartment, which is padded by the way, for either other books or for items which are fragile such as her glasses, calculator and cellular phone; in the winter she also packs her thermos in this compartment.

There is also a large zippered front compartment which has an organizer and media pocket, various open pockets and a key fob, which is great because that means that she will never lose her house-keys again which has been a problem up until now.

Comfort of use and Durability

I really love the fact that this book bag takes the stress off of my daughter’s back. It is easy for her to handle when she walks and also easy and small enough for her to handle when she needs to carry it up and down the steps when getting on the bus.

The High Sierra Backpack is made from DuraliteRipstop, Waffle Weave and 600-denier Duralite materials, which means that it can withstand virtually anything that a 12 year old can put it through, and the telescoping handle is very easy for her to release and stow.

I think one of my daughter’s favorite features on her new school backpack, apart from the fact that she can roll it along, is the zippered accessory compartment with a headphone port, as she is constantly listening to her MP3 player, and this makes her feel like she is one of the “cool kids” I think.

The one problem my daughter may have is that her brother may just claim it if she leaves it alone too long, as he has taken to borrowing it to use as a weekend backpack because the contoured, adjustable Vapel mesh padded shoulder straps make it comfortable to use as a regular backpack too. He also likes the fact that there is an open outside pocket into which he can place his water bottle, and he can lock it using the triangle clip.

As my son sometimes hikes or cycles very early in the morning when it is still dark outside, I am happy that there are reflective accents to the backpack so that he can be seen.

What Do Others Think?

I believe that it behooves one to do thorough research before purchasing any product, which includes reading reviews from users of the product so that one can hear “from the horse’s mouth” as such.

Here are some of the comments I came across:

  • “This is exactly the backpack/airport roller I was looking for to support me during a recent trip to Central Asia – it rolled very smoothly through the airport. “
  • “Easy to pull and easy to use as a backpack; It breathed nicely between my back and the pack itself. “
  • “Excellent size and it always remains in the vertical position. “

Something that really impressed me is that the company has been around since 1978, albeit under another name, and is a family-owned organization which is also the supplier to the U.S. Ski and Snowboarding teams, and whose membership includes the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA), SnowSports Industries America (SIA), and the Travel Goods Association (TGA).

To my mind, a company that specializes in adventure travel should know how to make a book-bag well, and the fact that all High Sierra wheeled products have a limited five-year manufacturer’s warranty is the cherry on top.

Are There Customer Complaints?

Upon checking various sites to see whether there were any complaints from those who have previously purchased the backpack, the only one I found was a mention that the handle was a bit short for someone over six feet tall, but even he said that despite that fact it is a really good bag. I am not that tall so I chose to ignore this comment, and, 99% of the reviews I read were nothing but positive.

Where Can You Buy the High Sierra Freewheel Wheeled Backpack?

There area various retailers that carry this backpack, but with the great discounts, free super saver shipping and free returns policy offered by Amazon.com, why would you buy anywhere else?
